This subject has been tossed about in the U.S Politics Cafe. Is Venezuela a "socialist" country or an average run of the mill dictatorship?

Without the name calling or finger pointing, let's try to talk about this at a civil level.

Mostly a dictatorship, but part socialism. Coming to America if Obamouth gets his way.

I call him Hugo the Ego.

His "Bolivarian Socialism" is just as bad as the regular kind. Since he's artificially suppressed food prices, farmers/ranchers aren't producing and he's had to nationalize all the stores. Food is in short supply.

I understand he's asked Cuba for help with food production. Or as one wag said, there's nothing like getting agricultural advice from a country that's turned the chicken into an endangered species. . .

I doubt VZ will have a revolution. The military are too well paid! They'll defend Chavez. Also, I found it interesting that Chavez started all kinds of social programs when oil was $147/bbl. I've heard in the media that he complains that oil is "too cheap". He needs at least $120/bbl to pay for his socialist programs. So he's "in the hole" right now. No wonder the country's economy stinks.

As a side, most every communist country I've ever heard of (and certainly every "socialist" country in Latin America) is a dictatorship. Venzuela is no exception.

Oh, and I found it interesting that Chavez put up a glass memorial marker to "Che"..only to find that citizens had shattered it a day or two after it was dedicated. No word whether it was replaced, but I doubt it. As a side, Chavez is quite the egotist. I understand he had a variety show on TV featuring him walking around town, explaining things and singing songs for like 2 hours...

Probably a little of both. He's a dictator trying to act like a socialist...a bit like his friend in Cuba.

Like we found it easier to do business with one strongman instead of dealing on a more open market. I think your right there. Short sighted of us and dumb to boot.

Fly, I may have an idea why. In the past, much of it had to do with our business dealings with certain countries. I don't think it is the same today.

When I said run of the mill, I meant he was the typical dictator. Nothing socialist about his way of doing things at all. Unless you are talking about how the elite in that country are doing very well and the majority of the population struggles to get by. Chavez might not be brutal like others such as Pinochet, Fujimori of Peru, and others similar, but a dictator all the same.

Do you predict a Revolución of the people to rectify the situation or is he too entrenched or are the people still accepting it.

When he was coming to power and cementing his grip didnt he portray himself as a hombre de tipo progresivo liberal?

Not average run of the mill dictatorship, a destructive one. There is currently fear of walking in the streets, that, someone or a bunch of people will grab you and beat you for anything you have.

They have to stand in line for food, anything. They cannot even buy cooking oil, yet, Chavez gives millions in aid to other countries and does nothing for his own.

He is now not having proper elections and not setting election dates. He may as well be dictator for life. He is inviting a dangerous situation for himself.
