Taxes going up. Revenue decreases because of reduction in vehicle moving violations.

While I think they will come, I expect it will be longer than the article suggests.

if the vehicle driving cuts down on folks who tail gate at 65 mph with their headlights no longer visible while doing hair, makeup or eating, then that might not be a bad thing.

Be wary, although this technology sounds good it can be used by those in power to control your traveling patterns. It is what could be a pre-curser to losing even more of our rights because the government will see and eventually use the advantage of turning you car into a paper weight if it deems you have driven to much. I know it sounds far fetched, but is it really?

Maintroll - "They can't and won't work until a viable infrastructure is in place to support them along with the fuel that they will need."
What infrastructure?
And what does this have to do with fuel?

pgerassi - "Most futuristic would be under the car inductive charging which has no exposed wires to shock the "chargee". Heck you could drive up to one, put it on the charge card, and get charged without ever leaving the car."
Isn't inductive charging inherently slow? So, a good choice for parking lots and garages, not so good for a quick charge.

To truly have cars that drive themselves, we will need a HUGE change in infrastructure. Smart roads, smart cars, fast effective communications between the cars and the highway system, and highly accurate and reliable navigation systems. Otherwise, this is all a pipe dream.

No automatic transmission, no electronic jim-crackery, and absolutely no robo-car. Color me old fashioned but I do go for the electric starter and sealed-beam headlights.
