Futuristic cars are coming faster than you think

Detroit Free Press -- Google started the debate about autonomous driving when it took a Toyota Prius and attached sophisticated but expensive equipment so the car could drive itself.

Engineers at auto supplier Continental want to continue the conversation with a semiautonomous version that is a more affordable and shorter-term solution. The team equipped a Volkswagen Passat with Continental technology, creating a car that pretty much drives itself in two of the most stressful and least satisfying driving conditions: stop-and-go traffic and boring stretches of highway.

We have the infrastructure to support the likely future fuel, electricity. Just not a standard battery voltage, current and attaching system from charger (equivalent to gas pump) to vehicle although attempts have been made. Most futuristic would be under the car inductive charging which has no exposed wires to shock the "chargee". Heck you could drive up to one, put it on the charge card, and get charged without ever leaving the car.

They can't and won't work until a viable infrastructure is in place to support them along with the fuel that they will need.

That Lidar system looks like it has the potential to replace the sensors at traffic lights, and improve their response patterns.

SOrry Folks, I have been driving since 1963, and I have had a Commercial since 1975. I am not going to be regulated to the back seat by Electronic Control Systems any time soon, and the Intrusive Big Brother Nanny State Government can just go Shimmy up a Tree!!!!!!!!!

I am looking forward to the day when I can purchase one of these autonomous cars. Then I can read instead of driving. And all those idiot aggressive drivers can do the same.

I'd rather not try this technology but that's ok because I can't afford it.

If they want to make things safer, get rid of the things like antilock brakes and traction control. If people started driving for the actual conditions on the road instead of relying on their cars to do so, everyone would have to slow down a bit (ok, that's a bit of a reach). At least it would slow people down a bit in the winter.

With so many drivers texting, applying makeup, eating breakfast, shaving, reading the paper, etc., many cars are already driving themselves.

sure.. and when they get around to the ones that fly... the insurance company lobbyists (via all those politicians looking out for "our" best interests) will require us to have personal TSA before we "drive" them

It is a joke. After the last deprssion a few years ago, many do not own homes not to mention fancy cars.

Fix the system. DON'T VOTE!

Autonomous and semiautonomous vehicles will probably give better fuel mileage too. They will be smoother on acceleration and decceleration than we humans are.
