Since most stations are now pay-at-the-pump, what differance does it make. Certainly none to me.

I almost always pay at the pump. But YES
very offended.

Even when signs up, I'm often preapproved by minority clerks at a non-minority managed station. However I have to prepay at minority managed stations.

But like I say, I almost always pay at the pump.

With drive-offs increasing, I understand why they do it, it is just so inconvienient that I find it to be a put-off. Mark me down as "yes - somewhat offended."

i see the point where prepay stops driveoffs , i understand convenience is stripped away when Prepay causes us to have to go in TWICE to pay a deposit/leave DL ,etc and then again go in to pay the final bill.

i dont see the point where people would boycott just because they dont get to pump b4 paying ,,pay at the pump is a good deal

i was at a Kroger in my town,,they said someone rolled a basket of groceries out the door -threw them in the car and ran ,,,is that called a ROLL OFF ??? :)

Yes, don't care for that at all, have passed up satations that do that. But I do understand why some do it that way. Drive aways.

Yes - Very offended. Once I know the gas station that requires you to pre-pay. I just don't go there again. There are other gas stations that I can go to.

Well, yesterday the cash reader wouldn't accept my $20 (even though it seemed to be in good condition, and it wasn't one of the new series), so I ended up making two trips inside, after all. There was no line, and I wasn't in a hurry anyway, so it was no big deal.

Btw, now that I've seen the discussion here, I can see that this poll should have taken into account the difference between "prepay at pump" and "prepay inside".

No, they have to deal with far too many dishonest people that take off without paying. Why should they be there if not to make money? One drive off could take away their profit for hours.

Why would anybody be offended?? I have my Shell Easy Pay tag so I guess I pay before I pump. Doesn't bug me... in fact it's quicker, and I don't have to talk to the poor bastard making minimum wage inside!

are you offended when they dont let you put your soda and candy or tobacco or anything else you buy at the store before you pay for it?
how much do you think the store makes on a gallon of gasoline?
if someone drives off with 20.00 of gas, the store has to pump 200 gallons of gas just to get back even.
i can understand why they prepay i would encourage it if we are really interested in lowering gas prices we would not ask the store owner to take unneccesary risks in his business AND complain at the same time about the price he is charging us. you cant have it both ways

I FEEL IT IS AN INCONVENIENCE TO PAY FIRST BECAUSE I LIKE TO FILL MY TANK UP AND WITH THE CHANGING GAS PRICES DAY TO DAY I NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH IT WILL COST.

Who can blame the operators? People often steal the gasoline when given the chance. I do not see how anyone can be offended!

Pre-payment for gas is not offensive as much as a reminder of how things have changed; away from 'service stations' to 'convenience stores'. Pre-payment is a reminder that to some people convenience includes dishonesty.

too many drive offs you can not blame the station at all or we'd be paying $2 a gallon all the time to make up for lost sales.

I just wish when they do require you to pre-pay that they could come up with a way that you don't have to wait in line twice.

No. I know operators, and losses by theft hurt them. There is nothing wrong in requiring payment for merchandise, whether it be pre-payment or post-payment.

I'm not offended at all...but, since I run a Gas Station in the UK where this practice is not common, I am just a bit biased!
Our unleaded gasoline is currently just under $5 for a US gallon and drive offs are commonplace.
If you believe that gas companies foot the bill for this or are insured, think again.. It is the service station operators who invariably suffer for this small percentage of bad customers so the only sensible route is pre-pay. (Pay at the pump is just starting to arrive in the UK)
I would greatly prefer to see EVERY customer come into my store to have the opportunity to increase the sale but as a regular US traveller, I am now familiar with pay at the pump and greatly prefer it.

I'm not offended at all... they are just trying to keep costs down. And if you pay by check, just get a debit card and you won't have the problem of leaving your driver's license inside. I've lived in other cities where almost ALL of the gas stations require pre-pay. No big deal, just a sad statement about people who steal gas.

I checked that I am "somewhat offended". I guess 'irritated' is a better word. Because of a very small minority of people who choose to steal gas, the rest of us are inconvenienced. I usually pay by check, and fill up my tank, so it's silly to prepay when you don't know what the total is going to be. So, I usually have to end up leaving my driver's license at the register. So yes, I am irritated - not at the gas stations that are requiring prepay, but at the people who, by driving off without paying, have made the gas stations have this policy.

Why be offended. They are only trying to protect their profits, and if you have a credit card you can prepay at the pump with that. If you use cash only, you must go inside, but again, they are only trying to protect their profits. If they didn't do so, you would be paying more to cover the drive offs.
