Electric cars (heard of Baker Electric) were around near the turn of the 20th Century, but they lost out to gas engines due to their limited range. 100 years later, they still suffer from limited range, despite years of research. While there is controversy surrounding GM's EV-1 being taken off the roads and destroyed, the problem remains high price and limited range. I'd more likely pay an extra $1000 for Ford's upcoming 3-cylinder Focus (about 45mpg) than to pony up even more for a hybrid, let alone an electric. I don't want an expensive car that's only good around town. I and the environment would be better off by my taking the bus or riding a bike. If they ever solve the battery problem, that will be a different matter. So far electricity is far cheaper than gasoline. Just not enough cheaper to offset the higher upfront cost of an EV.

Not surprised the "have one now" response is 0. Why would anyone who doesn't use gasoline be reading gas buddy?

CruiserPA has a great point in regards to the price difference. Another thing to think about is how can you travel without a recharge station at any gas station or workplace? You cannot so it does not seem very enticing.

Maybe someday, but what's the point? The up front costs will for nearly forever be much higher than a more traditional combustion engine. The environmental savings are dubious when most of us are on coal fired power plants. We're offsetting the pollution to a central location versus pouring it out a tailpipe. The range anxiety issue means that, even with innovation, the vehicle cannot be used for much of our travels.

These vehicles are several thousand dollars more expensive than a internal combustion one. You can buy a whole lot of gasoline for the price difference. You would have to own the car for a very long time to make a difference in what you pay for it. Most people never keep a car that long. The replacement batteries are also super expensive. I will stick with gasoline vehicles for now till something much better comes along that I can afford.

I'd own one now if: - I could afford it - I could plug in at home and at work - It could go roundtrip to work and out to dinner/shopping/movies afterward on one charge
So maybe someday.

I think they need to be easier for someone with a limited budget to buy first. Even then, they might need to have been around for a number of years to make it cheaper & easier to buy a used one.

My current vehicle is in pretty good shape, and we need a van due to business concerns. But, when we close the business, if all goes well, we will be looking to downsize. Depending on the costs, we probably would go electric or at least a hybrid.
