Deal calls for pumps that fix ‘hot fuel’ problem

KansasCity.com -- A fix for “hot fuel” is finally on the way.

In a precedent-setting decision, a federal judge has approved Costco Wholesale’s plans to keep customers from being shortchanged because gasoline and diesel fuel lose energy value as their temperature goes up.

In 14 states, not including Kansas and Missouri, Costco is set to be the first retailer to install pumps that automatically adjust fuel volume to account for temperature.
Costco was among several defendants in class-action lawsuits alleging that oil companies and retailers were costing consumers billions of dollars a year by selling them fuel without adjusting for temperature. Last year, Costco was the first to offer to settle the suits, which had landed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan.

There's the reverse problem in the north. That's why all the gas pumps in Canada say that volumes are "adjusted" for 15C (59F). Not sure if the pumps need to be replaced or if they can simply be upgraded. The cost of a thermocouple (to measure gas temperature) is negligible when compared to the overall price of the pump.

I think there's more to this. Maybe the pump adjusts the amount delivered so that you'll have the gallons you paid for once it's heated up in your tank.

And another thing - WHO do you think will pay for these NEW gas pumps??

Do you think Costco out of the goodness of thier heart will just spring for these!!!????!!

No you'll pay either in the store for higher prices or gas that isn't as cheap as it has been !!!

How will the pumps sense temperature?

Will the temperature of the underground gas tanks be used or the temperature of the gas in the pump as is sits in the hot sun?

Any body know?

Good for Costco. This is only a real problem in the Southern Zones. Pumps are set for 69 degree F.

No big difference to us, the consumers. But, it dings the oil companies big time. To us pennies are meaningless, to them those pennies add up to billions.

Carman, please do not SHOUT in the forums.

I believe that Costco is a well-run company that wants to turn a profit while treating its customers fairly. There was a very interesting one-hour program about Costco on CNBC just a few days ago.
