Will soaring prices keep travellers close to home?
Monday, March 24, 2008
The Globe And Mail -- TORONTO -- Most summers, the Powell family hooks their tent trailer to the back of their van at least four times, setting out for camping trips that take the Ottawa residents all over Ontario and as far as Nova Scotia.

This year, forecasts of skyrocketing gasoline prices are threatening to put the brakes on the distances they travel.

"It's not very pleasant, that's for sure," says Debbie Powell, 48, the mother of five sons. "Maybe as opposed to going to three or four places, we might only pick a couple of places and stay a little bit longer."

When I plan a vacation, it is because I can afford it. When prices go up, I don't cancel it because I might spend another 25 dollars.

If I were to go on a vacation to a place 1,500 miles away, it would require 50 gallons of gas at 30 mpg. At an averge of $3.25 per gallon, the cost would be $162.50 each way or $325 round trip. You can't fly four people for that.

But I'll take flying almost everytime, especially if I can get four tickets for $1,000. I'm also figuring $100 for two round trips at each airport. There are additional costs to driving like overnight lodging and meals that would run about $50 per person per day x 2.5 days, another $500 each way, or $1,000 plus tolls. And there is almost three days each way cut from the time we can be at our destinatinn. Yes, I'll fly.

The high fuel prices only affect those who do not have large incomes. That's the majority of us.

Won't affect people with six figure jobs,
which means it will affect most of us.
My kids are going to school and working
part-time small wage jobs and after gas
their little extra is littler.

Should be an "interesting" driving season... how to get across the country at $4/gallon? With the weak dollar, I sure won't be going through Canada!

If I could get away from work - gas price won't stop my vacation plans, but shortage of trained and breathing employees in our region likely will.

It's high enough now to make an impact ($4.90/gal Cdn here) - I've cut back as much as I can except for work.

Vacations are really the easiest way for consumers to use less gas, as we have to go to work and school.

The high summer prices will KILL our tourist economy here in Northern Michigan. I think we will see some "Mom and Pop" business close this year due to high heating costs this winter coupled with a decrease in winter and summer tourist traffic.

Gas is up about 75 cents a gallon. at 20 MPG a 2000 mile trip uses 100 gallons of gas, costing about 75 bucks more than the previous year. One night of a scaled down meal and a scaled down accomodation will pick up that increased cost. Kids are only kids once. Would you really bail on a trip over $75?

Gas has nothing to do with my decision to explore locales close to home this year. I don't trust the airlines to get me there safely (Southwest flying planes not fit for passengers; US Air losing plane parts mid-air; it goes on) and I don't enjoy dealing with rude drivers when I'm on vacation. The train sounds better and better...

In the words of the Brits: "Bloody Yeah love" ! It is changing our way of life in the United States. First we're not allowed to sing the National Anthem in schools any more. Then we're not allowed to print : "In God we trust" on the american bill, now the latest and the greatest...take our driving away. Can it get any worse ? Let all those foreigners get into our politics, and "Yeah" it can and will deffinetely get worse.

With gas prices already straining our budgets and the summer "demand" increases havent appeared on the pumps, I am certain that most vacation plans will be downsized this year.
